December 2024 Updates

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Happy Holidays from your Wings Aloft family!

New Adventures

Our president, Jessica, was in Kenya for 2 weeks during December. During this time, her and Hailey, the in country liaison had the opportunity to go to Garissa, a town in eastern Kenya. The population here is predominately of Muslim religion and it was a very unique experience. We are hopeful that other team members will soon get to visit and see just how special this place is! Jessica and Hailey worked alongside Luke and POT students to serve this community. This is an underserved community where the team was able to provide wheelchairs, perform assessments, and perform therapy with the people there. Our group chose to dress to respect the culture, despite it being 90+ degrees.

We met a sweet family with a daughter named Chelsea. She has been using a wheelchair, but was in need of a new one. Her parents were so grateful and Chelsea was beaming with joy when she was sitting in her new ride.

The other child pictured was also given a wheelchair. Pictured you can see how much better his positioning looks in the chair, while our team members make some final adjustments and ensure the wheelchair is fitting him appropriately.

Changing the Landscape of OT in Kenya

The Pediatric Occupational Therapy program celebrated the first cohort of graduates! The new cohort is in the midst of their program and is currently learning a lot about research. Both cohorts were able to join us for the trip to Garissa and it was fun to watch them teach each other what they have learned.

More Wheelchairs have arrived!

Shonaquip chairs arrived in Kenya. Thank you to all who donated. These modular chairs can be customized to each child. They are made in South Africa and are highly durable, lasting up to five years. They will be included in our research study in March.

Upcoming Trips

Our team is gearing up for trips to Kenya in March and Guatemala in May! While we are in Kenya in March, we should get the chance to work with the Shonaquip chairs for the first time, along with the other wheelchairs we have worked with in the past.

Wheelchairs are not free

Unfortunately, even “donated” wheelchairs come at a cost. Even if the families don’t have to pay for the wheelchair, someone does. It costs money for the parts to build the chair, ship the chair to the desired country, travel to the area with the waiting child, perform the assessment. All of these factors go into providing one wheelchair to one child. That is where you come in! Generous donations from supporters like you make this mission possible!

Children continue to be added to the list and desperately need wheelchairs.

This year wrapped up & forward thinking

This year Wings Aloft donated and provided over 50 wheelchairs to kids in Kenya.  Thank you for your generous support!

We are thankful to Suzanne Reese and Ashlee Magee, who have helped us formulate our goals for the next few years. Our goal for 2025 is to provide over 60 wheelchairs in Kenya and Guatemala.

Thank You for Being Part of Our Journey

With each wheelchair delivered and each life touched, we see the profound impact of your support. Together, we’re creating a world where everyone can thrive.

Have a Very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
